In August, 2016, Grass Lake High School Junior Izzy Melvin won the title of Miss Great Lakes Outstanding Teen. She is one of approximately 25 girls who will compete in June, 2017, at the Miss Michigan competition for the title of Miss Michigan's Outstanding Teen. Well done Izzy!
Alvarez Sisters & Dotts-Brown Claim Twirling State Championships
Saline High School served as the host for the 2017 National Baton Twirling Association’s State for 2017 on November 12th. The Twirlettes gained 16 state championships, 15 state titles and 23 top placings when the day was done.
Grass Lake 4th grader Hanna Alvarez (right in photo), was a top winner in the Advanced Juvenile division. Hanna won modeling, strut, solo, 2-baton and the freestyle championship which was every event she entered. Grass Lake 6th grader Haley Alvarez (left in photo), also won the Pre-teen state championship solo and freestyle title against some top state competitors. Haley and Hanna won traveling plaques that they will keep for one year and their name will remain on the plaque for years to come. Haley and Hanna will represent the state of Michigan in the National Majorette contest in July.
Teammate, Zoe Dotts-Brown, Grass Lake Freshman, won the Preteen 3-baton state championship. Zoe also competed in the advanced solo category and placed top 8 which qualified her for the National Majorette contest in July.
“It is quite an honor to achieve this advanced level and qualify for this national event”, stated Coach Susan Usher.
In the Intermediate division, Johanna Kegerreis, Jackson Christian freshman, and Grass Lake resident placed 3rd in the junior intermediate solo and won 2nd in modeling.
The Twirlettes are off to a great start to their competition season. These young ladies all started in the Grass Lake Twirlettes program and then transferred to the National team based out of Saline. They commit many hours a week to train not only in Saline but also in Grass Lake. They will continue to train for upcoming contest and prepare for their annual appearance in the Saline, Milan and Grass Lake Holiday parades and their Annual Holiday recital. New students are welcome in the new year.
